Welcome to the 3rd October What’s New news letter. Home and Garden Gifts ha
s been working with the DCUK Company for many years now and we have to say the wooden ducks are one of our best selling gifts.
Each duck is handmade from reclaimed Teak and Bamboo and has its own character; therefore no two ducks are ever quite the same. These ducks are totally unique and a must for any one who’s duck mad. The really nice thing about these ducks is they can be personalised and are collectable. You can start with the egg, then the duckling, then the ducklets and finally the adult ducks, just how big will your family get?
The ducks can be used as an indoor ornament or in the garden. If you intend to leave your ducks outside to face the British weather, please remember to stain them to protect the wood.
Many people have purchased a duck to give as a Christening or New Baby Gift, as it can be personalised with the baby’s name. They also make great Wedding Day presents for the Bride and Groom.
We have always sold the hand carved little ducklings with the personalised name tags as these little fellows make great leaving, thank you, end of year, birthday, engagement presents in fact they are just about suitable for any occasion! Welcome to the 26th of September’s What’s New news letter. September and October are both great months for planting. The soil is still warm so the roots have time to form before the winter sets in.
At Home and Garden Gifts we have several nurseries who we work with, they are able to deliver a wide variety of fruit trees and ornamental trees.
Our planting guide:
- First decide where you would like to plant your tree and mark a circle by using a cane and a 50cm length of string. Set the cane into the ground and score a circle. Carefully slide the spade under the grass to lift 5 cm of turf leaving you a circle ready to dig.
- Remove the soil from the hole to the depth of the root ball of the tree. Dig over the base of the hole to break up the soil. This allows the roots to work their way through the soil to anchor the tree.
- Tease out a few roots to stop them circling the root ball. Using a piece of wood make sure the tree is at the right depth the top of the soil should not be above the ground.
- Add a handful of fertiliser to the bottom of the hole, making sure it's evenly distributed. Mix some well-rotted manure or compost with the soil which was removed from the hole. Spread this around the root ball, make sure that there are no air pockets.
- Tread the soil firmly down. Once filled, water in well.
- Using a tree tie, securely attach the tree to the stake. Spread a thick layer of mulch or bark around the tree to keep down weeds.
- Water your newly-planted tree frequently, particularly in warm weather.

Fruit Trees:
Lemon This fine quality lemon tree has decorative fruit and fragrant flowers, sometimes both at once. It is called Four Seasons because it can produce lemons and flowers at all times of the year.
Apricot The Apricot tree has white blossom tinged with pink, it will be very early in Spring before the leaves emerge.
Cox Pippin Apple The Tree is deciduous with oval or elliptic green leaves blossoming in the spring. The fruit is produced in late summer and autumn.
Peach The tree has bright green willowy leaves and beautiful early pink blossom. The fruit ripens in September and has creamy-white flesh and an excellent flavour.
Damson A small reliable tree with white blossom in spring and small blue-black fruits in autumn. Fully hardy, likes sun and most soils.
Pear This tree has clusters of white flowers in mid-spring with large pale green fruit changing to yellow, cropping in autumn.
