During this timeframe, rail was the only convenient way to travel long distance: of course the car had been invented but was still very much in an experimental phase and not hugely reliable; travelling by ship around Europe was starting slowly starting to be competed with by rail that operated routes all over Europe via France; and aircraft was in the development stage and not at all ready for commercial use. Rail offered efficient travel but at a cost only regularly affordable by the elites, obviously there were separations of pricing due to class. This box-set features the train journey from London to Edinburgh aboard a first class locomotive and would therefore be open (in terms of affordability) to only the upper classes at which time.
