Advent is a term from the Latin word 'adventus' which means "arrival". In Christianity, Advent is a time of waiting for the arrival of Christmas. Advent begins on the nearest Sunday to 30th November (St. Andrew's Day) and ends at midnight on Christmas Eve. Advent Sunday is the first of the four Sundays before the 25th December. Advent dates for 2008 are: 30 November - First Sunday of Advent 200807 December - Second Sunday of Advent 200814 December - Third Sunday of Advent 200821 December - Fourth Sunday of Advent 200825 December: Christmas 2008In the traditional advent wreath, each of the five candles is lit on one of the Sundays of Advent until the fifth and final central candle is lit on Christmas Day. The outer four candles stand for: 1. God's people -The Candle of hope 2. The Old Testament prophets - The Candle of Peace 3. John the Baptist - The Candle of Love 4. Mary the mother of Jesus - The Candle of Joy
